Uruguay is the first country in the world to launch the state-organized sale of marijuana in pharmacies. From now on, registered users can buy two varieties of hemp in quantities of a maximum of ten grams a week.
According to the cannabis control institute, almost 5,000 citizens have registered for the purchase so far. About 70 percent of these are men.
Fabric is cheaper than the dealer
The gram of marijuana costs 1.30 dollars in the pharmacy - cheaper than the dealer. The legalization initiative is designed to break the power of drug clans. The law came into existence during the presidency of former left guerilla fighter José Mujica (2010-2015).
Unlike in the Netherlands, where sales are only tolerated in private coffee shops, Uruguay also regulates production. Two companies operate on behalf of the state commercial cultivation near a prison at Montevideo.
Tourists are not allowed to smoke
There are two other possibilities for legal consumption, as well as for the acquisition of pharmacies: the cultivation of up to six hemp plants at home or the membership in a club which grows hemp plants together and gives each member up to 480 Gram own consumption per year.
Unlike the Netherlands, tourists are not allowed to buy marijuana. This is to prevent a Kiffer-tourism.
