The European Refugee Agreement with Turkey should be extended from the perspective of EU Commissioner Günther Oettinger (CDU). "I am in favor of deciding a follow-up agreement between the EU and Turkey for the coming years."
This is "urgently necessary to give the tug-of-warers as little as possible to send refugees to Europe for much money," Oettinger told the "Welt". For 2016 and 2017, a total of three billion euros had been awarded to support the refugees in Turkey, which still had money until the end of the year.
In order to continue to provide adequate refugee aid, Oettinger said that a further € 3 billion would be provided through a follow-up agreement. "A significant part of this money should come from the EU budget," said the CDU politician of the newspaper.
The EU-Turkey agreement, which has been in place since last year, provides for the EU to send back all migrants who go to Greece illegally through Turkey and do not receive asylum.
For any returned Syrian refugee, another Syrian from Turkey may enter the EU directly and directly. This is meant to deter migrants from the crossing to Greece and to put the artisan on human smugglers. With the € 3 billion provided by the EU under this refugee pact, Turkey should improve the living conditions of fleeced Syrians in their own country.
