The sequence is: ARD, ZDF, RTL and Sat1 have agreed with representatives of Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) and SPD challenger Martin Schulz on the expiration of the TV duel before the Bundestagswahl.
On the show on September 3, two contestants - Maybrit Illner (ZDF) and Peter Kloeppel (RTL) as well as Sandra Maischberger (ARD) and Claus Strunz (ProSieben / Sat1) alternate the candidates as before consult.
As the four broadcasters reported, Merkel's representatives blocked themselves against a dramaturgical redesign of the format. Actually, the broadcasters wanted the two moderators to ask questions about a common entry into the show in blocks of 45 minutes each. The goal was "a clearer structure and more space for spontaneity and deepening", it said.
However Merkel's team had refused to participate in these conditions. "In order to allow this single direct confrontation between the Chancellor and the SPD's high-ranking candidate, and to take account of the interest of a broad public, the welcoming TV stations are returning to the model practiced in 2013."
Other top candidates must not interfere
In May, the broadcaster demand from the Greens, the Left and the FDP had refused to open the TV duel for their top candidates. They want to offer the smaller parties in other programs a forum. On 21 September, ARD and ZDF are planning a final round with the chairmen of all parties represented in the Bundestag. AfD and FDP should also be represented if they have the prospect of entering the parliament in the final phase of the election campaign.
Sat1 announced on 30 August a program with top representatives of the Greens, the left, the FDP and the AfD. RTL does not plan a TV debate with representatives of the smaller parties. However, the broadcaster wants to accompany all the top candidates as part of a portrait series for the "Nachtjournal".
