Manuela Schwesig (SPD) has been elected as the first woman to head the state government of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The 43-year-old follows the sick predecessor Erwin Sellering.
The former Federal Minister of Family Affairs received 40 of 70 valid votes on Tuesday. This was announced by State President Sylvia Bretschneider (SPD). It thus received two votes less than the coalition groups of the SPD and the CDU had mandates.
Schwesig is the first woman at the head of a Schwerin state government. At the same time, she is also the youngest governor in the 16 federal states. After her swearing in before the state parliament, Schwesig said that it was "honor and obligation" for her to be Minister-President of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. She was to go to the office "with all her strength, experience and passion" for the good of the citizens.
Predecessor seller due to cancer disease resigned
In the morning Schwesigs predecessor Erwin Sellering (SPD) officially resigned from his position. He had announced this step at the end of May because of a serious cancer. Sellering was in Schwerin for nine years. Sylvia Bretschneider (SPD), the country's President, paid tribute to his achievements before the election of Schwesigs. Schwyig wants to take over all Ministers from Sellering's government team.
