The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Rome has ordered the Austrian Ambassador, after Austria has announced to introduce border controls on the Brenner Pass due to the increasing number of refugees.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Rome said that this was the consequence of the Austrian announcement that soldiers would be stationed on the Brenner Pass. In view of the increasing number of refugees in Italy, Austria wants to introduce "very promptly" checks on the Brenner Pass and also to station soldiers in the border area.
Austria's Defense Minister Hans Peter Doskozil (SPÖ) told the "Kronen Zeitung" on Monday that he considered an "assistance" of the Austrian army "essential if the inflow to Italy is not diminishing". According to the report, 750 soldiers are available for use as border guards.
At the weekend the Austrian Ministry of Defense had had four armored vehicles transferred to the border area. In the face of rising refugee numbers, Italy is already left alone by the EU partners.
